What started with 32 countries battling it out for close to a month, will now culminate in a play-off between Argentina and France. Using ThoughtSpot for Sheets to visualize World Cup player statistics

While everyone’s eagerly waiting to see who will take home the cup this year, we had Spotters, Damian Waldron and Tejas Sachdeva analyze the data using ThoughtSpot for Sheets to share their insights and predictions.

Damien Waldron.

Analysis from Damian Waldron, Principal Customer Success Architect:

“Argentina vs. France. Messi vs. Mbappe. The last time France played Argentina at the World Cup, the game ended with 7 goals and 8 cards. All the data points to a very close game, and I’m excited to use self-service analytics and pull out some insights using ThoughtSpot for Sheets. France definitely scores better when it comes to total blocks, accurate crosses, and successful dribbles. Meanwhile, Argentina has drawn more fouls this World Cup.

With this data visualization, it’s clear the top 6-7 assists by players are from France. This tells us that Argentine defenders cannot lock down on a single player.

Looking at successful dribble attempts, the numbers are more evenly spread for both teams. Messi and Di Maria Hernandez are the main contributors for Argentina, and Mbappe and Dembele for France.

As per the data, when the ball is in dispute, most fouls have been committed by the Argentine players. We can expect some fireworks as they seem to not mind committing fouls or receiving yellow cards.

I anticipate a high intensity game with some questionable tackles—and of course, some Messi brilliance. I predict a win from France given their all round contributions over the course of this World Cup.”

We know that a lot rests on the shoulders of Mbappe and Messi. From the chart below, Mbappe surely has more successful dribbles than Messi, with both players having similar numbers on total accurate passes. But this doesn’t account for the Messi Magic, which is something we will only be able to watch during the finals game 🙂

France definitely seem to be better at defending, with their total saves inside the box being way higher than that of Argentina.

While the data shows us that France has a higher chance of winning the World Cup, I’m hoping to see an extremely fast paced game. Meanwhile, I’ll be rooting for Messi and the Argentines to bring home the cup.”

Based on their performance over the past matches in this World Cup, it looks like France has turned their considerable firepower on. But will that be enough to defeat the Argentines with the likes of Messi and Alvarez? We will just have to wait and find out on Sunday.
